Breast Lift / Mastopexy
As a woman ages, her breasts can acquire a sagging or drooping appearance due to the stretching of the skin and ligaments that support them. Additional factors which influence these changes include pregnancy and significant weight fluctuation.
Mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, helps restore a more youthful breast appearance by:
- Lifting
- Reshaping
- Tightening
- Reducing the size of an over-stretched areola (if necessary)
Breast Lift Techniques
There are a variety of techniques available, depending upon the shape of your breasts, your overall body proportions, and your goals. A breast lift typically does not result in a substantial change in the overall size of the breast, and if this is a concern, either breast augmentation or breast reduction might be advised in addition to or instead of a breast lift. Women who are good candidates for a breast lift are at a stable weight and are bothered by the sagging breast tissue which causes the nipple to lie below the breast crease or even to point downward. Smoking is strongly discouraged, as this adversely affects your result. Mastopexy procedures are typically performed at our Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery outpatient facility.
After Your Breast Lift
You can expect to wear a fitted post-surgical bra during the recovery period and be back to normal activities within several weeks.
