bOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical intervention for the aging face which originally gained popularity as a treatment for frown lines in the central forehead. This area is known as the glabellar region. Other areas of the face which develop characteristic patterns of wrinkles are also amenable to treatment with Botox. These include the upper forehead or brow, the upper nose, the areas surrounding the eyes (periocular regions), and the area surrounding the mouth (perioral region).

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein which is made by Allergan, Inc. It is the only brand of botulinum toxin which is FDA approved for cosmetic use, and the only form of the drug used by our practice. Botox is injected in small doses in the areas where treatment is desired. The protein blocks transmission of the signals that are conducted between nerves and muscles. The effect of the injection does not occur until approximately 3-4 days following the procedure. Typically, after the desired result is achieved, the facial lines present in the area of treatment are no longer present or significantly diminished due to decreased tone in the affected muscle.

Injection of Botox is performed in the office setting. It does not require local anesthesia and there is minimal down time following the procedure. The procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes. The areas injected may experience some temporary bruising. After the injection, patients may return to normal activity and may wear make-up. We encourage patients not to engage in vigorous exercise on the day of injection.

Results of Botox injection typically last approximately 4 months, however there is some variability among individuals.

Risks involved with Botox injection include a chance of side effects such as headache, nausea, respiratory infection or flu-like syndrome, and temporary eyelid droop. In addition there is a minimal risk of allergic reaction to the product. The above complications rarely occur but are reported by Allergan.

Certain people should not undergo Botox injection. These include patients with neurological disorders including myasthenia gravis, ALS, MS, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome. Also, mothers who are breast feeding, pregnant women, or women attempting to become pregnant should not undergo injection.
