a Breast Reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of the breast mound and change the breast shape. It is performed to make the patient’s breast size fit her body size, relieve symptoms such as neck and back pain, and restore the youthful shape of her breast. After surgery, many patients describe lifestyle improvements such as the ability to participate in sports and other activities without pain or embarrassment, improved clothing options and improved self-esteem. This procedure is commonly covered by insurance companies, if patients meet their criteria.

Ideal patients are close to their ideal body weight and have tried, but failed to manage their symptoms through conservative (non-surgical) means. These include weight loss, physical therapy and treatment with medications such as muscle relaxants or painkillers.

Breast reductions can be performed as outpatient surgical procedures and take about 3 hours. The procedure removes excess breast tissue, and then redrapes the breast skin around the nipple and remaining breast tissue, leaving a youthful-appearing breast with the nipple at about the level of the middle of the upper arm.

Side effects are few and may include soreness and swelling, bruising, temporary changes in sensation and sensitivity. Risks include scarring, skin loss, bleeding, infection and asymmetry. Serious problems are very rare. We recommend waiting at least 6 months before or after pregnancy to have breast surgery.

Afterwards patients should not lift over 15 lbs for about 4 weeks, and must wear a support bra for 3 weeks. Most patients can return to work after about 2 weeks. Postoperative cup size is reduced to a variable extent after a breast reduction, although the surgeon cannot promise what a particular patient’s bra size will be. The procedure should not reduce the ability of women to breast feed, although this cannot be guaranteed. Breast reductions will not affect breast cancer risk, and women are instructed to obtain mammograms and perform breast self-exams as they would if they had not had any breast surgery.
