one of the keys to a balanced lower face is proportionate shape and position of the chin. Chin enhancement (or “genioplasty”) is a procedure intended to correct chin position either through bony surgery or placement of a small implant. Weakness of the chin can lead to the perception that the entire face is imbalanced. A genioplasty can restore the balanced appearance of the lower face.

Patients often seek a genioplasty as part of a plan to improve the balance, symmetry and proportion of their lower face. The genioplasty is usually combined with other procedures such as face lift or nose reshaping (“rhinoplasty”). Thus they can correct changes due to time, genetics or lifestyle.

A genioplasty can be performed in about 1-2 hours. The surgery can be performed through incisions below the chin or inside the mouth. In some cases the changes can be performed through reshaping of the bone of the chin, and in others an implant is placed to enhance the size of the chin. The extent of the correction is matched to the rest of the face to achieve a balanced result.

Side effects include bruising and swelling and are usually minor. Risks include numbness of the chin and infection.

The recovery time depends on the type of surgery, but is usually quick. Patients usually return to usual activities within a week, and may be asked not to chew tough foods for about 3 weeks.
