estylane® is a gel-like substance which is used as a filler to restore volume to areas of the face affected by aging. It is injected into the dermis or deep layer of the skin. Commonly treated areas of lines and wrinkles are those which surround the mouth and nasal region. The nasolabial folds, the lines which extend from the side of the nose to the mouth, are frequently injected to soften the central face. Lines which extend downward from the corners of the mouth, fine wrinkles involving the skin of the upper and lower lips, and creases of the chin may also be injected. Certain deep wrinkles in the forehead may be amenable to treatment. Restylane may also be utilized for enhancing the fullness of the lips.
Unlike injectable collagen, Restylane is not an animal product. It is a naturally occurring polysaccharide which is a normal component of human skin and connective tissue. This substance, known as hyaluronic acid, is not perceived by the human immune system as a foreign agent. This enables the product to remain stable and reduces risks of adverse reactions.
Restylane generally lasts 4-6 months. The product’s duration is dependent on the skin’s reabsorption of hyaluronic acid; therefore, there is some variability among individuals regarding duration.
Restylane injection is performed in the office under local anesthesia. A topical numbing cream is applied to areas to be treated prior to injection. A “dental” block which is created with injectable local anesthetic may also be used if the patient desires.
Downtime is minimal for most areas of injection. Some bruising and redness are common, however make-up may be worn on the evening following the procedure. With injection procedures involving the lips, noticeable swelling is present for 24-48 hours. This swelling is largely due to the sensitive nature of the lips and Restylane’s affinity for water. When the swelling subsides, the final result is achieved.
Adverse reaction to Restylane is relatively rare. Possible side effects include the slight redness or bruising mentioned above as well as tenderness or itching at the injection site, allergic reaction (1 in 2000 patients), and localized contour irregularity or granuloma.
