Fat Transfer to Face, Hands & Body
Men and women who want to look younger have many options, but not everyone wants to have surgery. Others prefer not to have foreign substances injected into their faces. Fat transfer is an advanced plastic surgery technique that uses your own fat to soften lines and wrinkles, correct minor imperfections and enhances facial contours. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers fat transfer for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.
What is Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer is a two-step procedure that uses your own fat cells to correct common cosmetic concerns, such as lines, wrinkles, imperfections and poorly-defined facial contours. The fat is extracted from an area of your body, purified and then injected into the treatment area. We harvest the fat from areas where you have excess fat. The amount of fat that is removed does not significantly change the extraction area, but fat transfer can be combined with liposuction if you are interested in body contouring to remove a larger amount of fat.
Benefits of Fat Transfer
A fat transfer can be used for:
- Filling in lines, wrinkles, and creases
- Adding volume to the cheeks
- Correct depressions in the skin
- Enhance the lips
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Fat Transfer?
The ideal candidate for our advanced fat transfer procedure is a man or woman:
- With adequate fat in the donor area
- Who prefers to not have surgery or injectable fillers
- Understands the risks and anticipated outcomes of the procedure
What Do I Need to Do Before Having Fat Transfer?
The quality of the results of a fat transfer are dependent on the skills of the medical professional who performs the extraction and injections. Our board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in fat transfer, so we recommend that you schedule a consultation at our facility.
What Should I Expect on The Day of My Fat Transfer?
The fat transfer begins with the liposuction to extract the donor fat. Small incisions are made in the skin so that your surgeon can access the fat. A cannula is inserted through the incision to dislodge and suction the fat. Once the fat is harvested, it is purified and put into a syringe. Injections are made in the treatment area, such as the lips, cheeks and other areas of the face. Your surgeon will use several injections, each of which adds a small amount of fat. This technique ensures that your results are natural.
How Long Does It Take to Perform Fat Transfer?
The fat transfer takes 30 to 60 minutes.
What to Expect After Fat Transfer
You may experience tenderness, bruising and mild swelling in the area where the fat was removed via liposuction. Areas, where the fat is injected, may feel tight and tender, and you may develop some bruising and swelling. You will need to avoid sunlight for the first 48 hours.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Fat Transfer?
The scars from the liposuction are very small. You will not have scars at the injection sites.
When Will I See the Results?
You will see results right after your fat transfer procedure.
What Are Possible Complications of Fat Transfer?
In rare cases, fat transfers have caused:
- Irregularities at the treatment site
- Damage to nerves, blood vessels, and muscles
You can minimize your risk for these complications by working with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
How Long Will the Results of Fat Transfer Last?
On average, the results of a fat transfer last three to six months. Some patients do not need maintenance injections for one year or longer.
