What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is on the rise. The condition can develop on any part of your body, but most cases involve skin cancer on the neck, face, and head, areas that are routinely exposed to sunlight. Understanding your treatment options helps you make an informed decision about your skin cancer treatment.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Skin Cancer Treatment?

Anyone can develop skin cancer, but some people are at higher risk, such as:

  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Experience with a sunburn that produces blisters
  • History of radiation treatments for acne
  • Having freckles and fair skin
  • Living close to the equator, at high altitude or in a location that has year-round, intense sunlight
  • Having light-colored eyes and hair
  • Spending a large amount of time outdoors or in other environments with ultraviolet radiation
  • Having a significant number of moles
  • Having moles that have an unusual size and shap

Benefits of Skin Cancer Treatment

Skin cancer is a general term that describes several types of growths that develop on the skin. These growths can be harmless or life threatening.

Skin cancer treatment at Richmond Plastic Surgeons helps you understand the type of cancer, how to effectively and safely treat it and how to prevent future recurrences.

What Do I Need to Do Before Having Skin Cancer Treatment?

The first step in having skin cancer treatment is to meet with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons to find out more about the skin cancer or growth.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common and least dangerous type of skin cancer. The lesions grow slowly and typically stay within the original boundary. Basal cell carcinoma is not life threatening, but the cancer can grow downward through the skin into the muscles, bone and other tissues.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. It most often develops on the ears, lips, and face. This type of cancer can spread to other parts of your body, such as internal organs and lymph nodes. Left untreated, squamous cell carcinoma is life threatening.

Malignant melanoma is the least common, but we are seeing an increase in cases each year. This is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Early detection is key for the best long-term outcomes. If left untreated or treated too late, the cancer can spread throughout the body and be deadly.

In addition to skin cancer, your growth or skin irregularity may be a mole or keratoses. Neither of these require treatment. Moles can be removed for cosmetic reasons. Solar keratoses may develop into squamous cell cancer. Because skin growths and irregularities represent a wide range of diagnoses, a good first step in treatment is to schedule a consultation at Richmond Plastic Surgeons
