Your ears are an important part of your overall look, and it can be frustrating to feel like they don’t quite give you the appearance you want. Otoplasty, also known as “ear shaping,”  or “ear surgery,” can correct the shape, size, and position of the ears, for that attractive and proportional look you desire. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers ear surgery and ear reshaping (otoplasty) for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What Exactly Is Otoplasty?

Genetics play a critical role in the shape, size, and position of your ears, and being unhappy with how they look can feel quite frustrating. Children often suffer the most painful consequences of having misshapen ears, due to the type of teasing and bullying they can endure in social scenarios. Sometimes this doesn’t end with childhood, which is why otoplasty — a cosmetic procedure that helps reshape the ears — might be the perfect way to take control over your appearance, once and for all.

Before & After

What Are the Benefits of Ear Surgery and Ear Shaping?

  • Ears that stand too far out from your head
  • Disproportionately large ears
  • Asymmetrical ears
  • General abnormalities in your ears
  • Ear lobes that are too small or large

What Should I Do Before My Ear Surgery or Ear Shaping?

Your ears are made primarily of cartilage, making them easy to work with and shape. At Richmond Plastic Surgeons, we specialize in ear shaping procedures for adults and children, alike.

Before your procedure, we’ll set you up with an in-person consultation, wherein one of our board-certified surgeons will walk you through every step of the procedure.

If you’re a parent considering ear surgery for your child, you should take an active role in the process, gauging how your little one feels about their ears, maintaining a positive attitude toward the procedure, to help your set child at ease, and allow them to feel comfortable and confident about their surgery.

What Should I Expect on The Day of My Otoplasty?

Children tend to be most comfortable with general anesthesia, with adults typically needing only local anesthesia and a sedative.

Your surgeon will make an incision at the back of your ear, to access the cartilage and reshape it. Larger pieces of cartilage may be removed to move your ears closer to your head. Once your surgeon is satisfied with the results, the incisions will be closed with sutures. Our Richmond ear surgery is some of the best around and can bring a new light of confidence in your life.

What Can I Expect After My Otoplasty?

Your ears will be wrapped with a comfortable bandage, and should be protected from impact of any type.  Children need to be watched carefully, to ensure that they don’t touch or rub their ears. Adults can go home the same day, but children might need to stay overnight in the hospital.

Adults can return to work after five days, and children can return to school after seven. You’ll want to talk with their teachers, and make sure they can closely monitor your child. It also might be best to keep them off the playground until they have fully healed.
