Looking younger is a common goal for many men and women in the Richmond area. Our MedSpa offers microdermabrasion to improve your complexion and correct signs of aging. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers microdermabrasion for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Cosmetic imperfections and certain signs of aging begin in the outermost layers of skin. With microdermabrasion, we remove the damaged skin to reveal younger skin that is free of those superficial imperfections. The treatment also stimulates your body to produce more collagen and elastin which are two key components of a young skin.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Also known as dermaplaning, microdermabrasion offers the following benefits:

  • Exfoliation of the skin Improve skin texture
  • Effective for treating wrinkles, liver spots, acne, certain scars and some types of skin lesions
  • Dramatic improvement in your appearance

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

Dermaplaning is a safe and effective treatment for common skin imperfections, but some patients may not be good candidates for the procedure, such as those with:

  • Uncontrolled acne
  • A history of radiation treatment and severe sunburns
  • A history of having chemical peels
  • Skin sensitivity
  • A medical condition that requires the use of Accutane within the past 18 months

If you are not a good candidate for microdermabrasion, our esthetician works with our board-certified plastic surgeons to recommend alternative treatments to improve your skin.

What Should I Expect During My Microdermabrasion Treatment?

We apply a topical numbing agent to your skin at the beginning of the procedure. A microdermabrasion treatment is performed by using a special device that has a tip covered with diamond particles. The device is applied to the surface of your skin and slowly moved across the treatment area.

At the end of the treatment, we apply a special ointment to the skin. The area may also be covered by a bandage. Your skin will have a red, irritated appearance for up to three days. You may also notice a scab forming over the area. The skin may also be swollen, and you can manage any discomfort with non-prescription pain medication. You will be able to return to work after two days, but most patients prefer to take at least two weeks off to allow the skin to return to a more normal state. You should avoid any strenuous activities for the first two weeks.

In the next stage of healing, the skin starts to flake, and the scabs will fall off the skin. Your skin will be pink for up to six weeks. We will provide recommendations for skin care that you can use during the healing period.
