Revision rhinoplasty is a reconstructive surgery that repairs problems caused by a previous surgery or trauma. The board-certified plastic surgeons of Richmond Plastic Surgeons specialize in revision rhinoplasty, so you feel confident that you will not need another surgery. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers reconstructive rhinoplasty for children and adults in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What is Reconstructive Rhinoplasty?

The number of cases we see for revision rhinoplasty has grown in recent years. Patients who want reconstructive rhinoplasty fall into two categories:

  • Patients who suffer trauma to the nose
  • Patients who had rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the results

Nose trauma cannot be prevented, but revision rhinoplasty to repair a previous cosmetic nose job can be avoided by working with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Unfortunately, as plastic surgery has become more mainstream, more clinicians are offering cosmetic procedures.

On some occasions, these professionals do not have the specialized training or experience needed to achieve the desired results. Problems range from small imperfections caused by the surgeries to significant functional problems. We have also met with patients who believed that they were making the best cosmetic choices, but eventually are disappointed with how their new noses look.

Whatever your reason for wanting reconstructive and revision rhinoplasty, you will feel comfortable knowing that you are working with the best revision rhinoplasty surgeons in the Richmond area.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Reconstructive Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is recommended for:

  • Patients who are dissatisfied with the aesthetic or functional results of a previous nose job
  • Patients who have had previous nose surgeries that were unsuccessful, such as surgery for a deviated septum

What Should I Expect on The Day of My Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is a highly customized surgery that is based on the present state of your nose and nasal passages as well as your desired outcomes for the procedure.

During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will explain how the revision rhinoplasty surgery will be performed. The surgery may require:

  • Removing bone, skin, and cartilage
  • Using bone, cartilage and skin grafts
  • Reshaping the structures inside the nose

What to Expect After Reconstructive Rhinoplasty

Recovery from your revision rhinoplasty is similar to the recovery from your initial nose surgery. A splint is placed on the nose and covered with bandages. Pain medication can be taken to help with any discomfort. The sutures and splint are removed after five to seven days. You will have moderate swelling for up to ten days, but it may take one year for the swelling to completely subside. You can return to work after seven days and strenuous activities after 14 to 21 days.

What Are Possible Complications of Rhinoplasty?

Although rare, complications can arise from revision rhinoplasty surgery, such as:

  • Runny nose
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Congestion and difficulty breathing
  • Cosmetic imperfections
