Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) in Richmond, VA
Have you noticed sagging skin and fat on your upper arms? This is not caused by poor diet and exercise, but rather a combination of genetics and anatomy or significant weight loss. Brachioplasty is an arm lift procedure that removes the excess fat and tissue from the upper arm to restore the natural contours. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers brachioplasty for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.
What is Brachioplasty?
Aging, changes in your weight and family history all determine if you develop sagging, fatty upper arms. Because you have little to no control over these factors, diet and exercise will only have limited results. Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, restores the upper arm area to achieve a more toned appearance.
Benefits of an Arm Lift
Your plastic surgeon will recommend brachioplasty to:
- Eliminate pockets of stubborn fat in the area between the elbow and shoulder
- Remove sagging skin
- Tighten the underlying muscles and other structures
Arm lifts are tailored to the unique needs of each patient, so the goals of your brachioplasty may incorporate one or more of the outcomes.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Brachioplasty?
The best candidates for arm lift surgery are men and women who:
- Are in good health and do not smoke
- Are committed to a lifestyle that includes proper nutrition and exercise
- Have inadequate elasticity of the skin in the upper arm area which causes the skin to droop or sag
- Understand the risks and benefits of the procedure
What Do I Need to Do Before Having an Arm Lift?
The results of any brachioplasty procedure are only as good as the skills of the surgeon. In order to achieve the best possible results from your arm lift, start with a personal consultation at Richmond Plastic Surgeons. We specialize in brachioplasty for men and women in Richmond, and we have an exceptional reputation amongst our patients.
What Should I Expect on The Day of My Brachioplasty?
The arm lift procedure works by removing the extra skin and fat that give your upper arms an unattractive appearance. In order to remove this tissue, the plastic surgeon makes an incision that begins at the elbow and extends to the armpit area. Next, the underlying muscles and structures are tightened and held in place with dissolvable sutures. The skin and fat is pulled tight across the top of the incisions, and the excess is trimmed. Liposuction may be used to remove smaller pockets of fat before the incision is sutured closed.
How Long Does It Take to Perform an Arm Lift?
Most arm lifts take about two hours to perform.
What to Expect After Brachioplasty
Your arms may be wrapped in a compression bandage or garment to reduce swelling and help with the healing process. You will need to limit your activities for one to two weeks, which includes avoiding strenuous activities. You may want to have someone available to help you during this time. You will have mild to moderate swelling for the first three days, and you will feel tired for up to seven days. Full recovery can take up to two weeks.
Will I Have Scars After Getting an Arm Lift?
You will have a scar after your brachioplasty. After the first seven to 10 days, you will notice that the incision is healing and forming a pink scar. The color of the scar slowly changes to tan or brown, depending on your skin color. Most people will not notice the scar because it is on the inside of your arm that is held next to your body except when you raise your arm.
When Will I See the Results?
You will see a noticeable improvement in the shape and size of your arms immediately after the surgery. The swelling can mask the final results for a few months.
What Are Possible Complications of Brachioplasty?
All surgeries have a degree of risk for complications, such as:
- Irregularities in the skin or subcutaneous fat
- Loss of sensation on the skin
- Nerve, muscle or blood vessel damage
These complications can be minimized by working only with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
How Long Will the Results of an Arm Lift Last?
You will see an amazing transformation to your upper arms after brachioplasty, but no surgery can stop the effects of aging, weight fluctuations, medical conditions and other factors. With proper diet and exercise, though, you will enjoy the benefits of your arm lift for many years.
How Much Does Brachioplasty Cost in Richmond?
Brachioplasty is an elective procedure, so the cost is not covered by medical insurance. Because each surgical plan is customized to the patient, the cost varies. We provide an accurate cost of your arm lift after the consultation appointment. We accept several forms of payment, including financing through CareCredit®.
