Breast augmentation is one of the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures in the Richmond area, but not all women want or need breast implants for fuller breasts. Breast augmentation with fat transfer is one of the newest techniques available. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers breast augmentation with fat transfer for women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What is Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer?

Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a surgical procedure to enhance the breasts without using implants. Instead, augmentation is achieved with your own fat. Fat cells are gently liposuctioned from a part of your body where there is excess fat tissue. This can be any area you would like to sculpt or slim, such as the bra roll, abdomen, thighs, or bottom. Once the fat is removed, it is cleansed and purified, then injected into the breasts to achieve a naturally curving, symmetrical, larger size and attractive shape.

What are the Benefits?

We recommend breast augmentation with fat transfer for women who want:

  • Less downtime
  • No incisions or scars
  • To enhance their breasts without implants

The technique can also be used for women who have breast implants, but who could benefit from the refinement offered by fat transfers to the breast area.

Who is a Ideal Canidate?

Although breast augmentation with fat transfers can be performed on any woman, the patients who benefit the most are women who:

  • Only need a slight enhancement to the breasts
  • Have a small amount of asymmetry
  • Want the most natural look to their enhanced breasts
  • Have adequate donor fat on the body

Preparations Before the Surgery

Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a relatively straightforward procedure, but the outcome is highly dependent on the skills of the plastic surgeon. A certain level of finesse is needed to maintain a natural yet enhanced appearance. For this reason, the first step you should take is to schedule a consultation at Richmond Plastic Surgeons. We specialize in breast augmentation with fat transfers, so you will love the results.

Some women require a procedure known as “tissue expansion” prior to the procedure. This process stretches the breast tissue and muscle to accommodate the increase in breast size.

What to expect on the day of surgery

Enhancing the breasts via fat transfers is a two-step process. First, the fat is harvested from another part of your body, such as the hips, abdomen, thighs or back. The amount of fat that is removed will only make a slight change in the appearance of the donor area. If you have liposuction specifically to remove larger amounts of fat, we can use that fat for your breast augmentation. Liposuction requires very small incisions through which a special tube, known as a cannula, is inserted. The cannula is connected to a suction device and performs two operations — dislodging the fat and removing it from the body. Once we have donor fat, it is processed and then injected into the breasts to achieve the desired enhancement.

How Long will this procedure take?

The procedure for breast augmentation with fat transfers takes about one to two hours, but your surgery time may be longer. Your plastic surgeon will explain your individual procedure during the consultation.

What to Expect After Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

You will need to heal in two areas —the area where the fat is extracted and your breast area. Tissue trauma associated with this type of breast augmentation is minimal, but you may have tenderness, bruising, swelling and discomfort. The symptoms should last no longer than seven to 10 days, but most women find that the symptoms subside in less than one week. You may see some changes to your breasts in the months after the procedure. This is normal as some of the fat cells do not survive the transfer procedure. We will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and recommend any additional injections that may be needed.

FAQ

The only scars that result from breast augmentation with fat transfer are those that develop where the incisions are made for the removal of fat. The incisions that we use are quite small, so the scars are not visible except upon close inspection.
