Fat Transfer to Face, Hands & Body

Men and women looking for a more youthful appearance have plenty of options, but not everyone wants to undergo surgery or have foreign substances injected into their faces. Fat transfer is an advanced surgical technique that uses your own fat to soften lines and wrinkles, correct minor imperfections, and enhance your facial contours for a younger overall look. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers fat transfer for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What Exactly Is Fat Transfer?

Also known as autologous fat transplantation or micro-lipoinjection, fat transfer is a two-step procedure that uses your body’s own fat cells to correct common cosmetic concerns, like lines, wrinkles, imperfections, and poorly-defined facial contours.

We’ll extract fat from elsewhere on your body (typically an area where there is excess, such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks or elsewhere), purify it, and then inject it into the treatment area, where it will fill in irregularities and wrinkles. The amount of fat removed does not significantly change the extraction area, but fat transfer can be combined with liposuction if you are interested in body contouring to remove a larger amount of fat.

What Can I Expect on The Day of My Fat Transfer?

The first step of fat transfer involves liposuction to extract the donor fat, once the area has been cleansed and treated with a local anesthetic. Small incisions will be made in the skin, through which a cannula will be inserted, to dislodge and suction the fat.

Once the fat has been harvested, it’ll be purified and put into a syringe, at which point it’ll be injected into the treatment area. Your surgeon will use several injections, each of which adds a small amount of fat, ensuring natural-looking results.

What Can I Expect After Fat Transfer?

After your Richmond fat transfer, you’ll likely experience tenderness, bruising, and some mild swelling in the area where fat was removed via liposuction.

The injection site will likely feel tight and tender, and you can develop some bruising and swelling. The severity of these symptoms depends upon the size and location of the treated area.

In cases where a large area was filled, swelling and puffiness in the recipient site can last several weeks.

You’ll need to avoid sunlight for the first 48 hours, but many of our happy patients resume normal activity right away. You can use makeup with sunblock protection to help conceal your condition.
