Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) in Richmond, VA

A masculine physique includes a toned, sculpted chest. Some men cannot achieve this because they have a condition known as “gynecomastia” that causes enlarged male breasts. Fortunately, the excess tissue and fat associated with the condition can be removed with male breast reduction for gynecomastia. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers gynecomastia surgery for men in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What is Gynecomastia?

Many men have gynecomastia, a medical condition that causes enlarged male breasts due to the presence of excess fat and glandular tissue. Male babies and teenagers often develop “breast buds” that disappear as the child gets older. Some men, though, continue to have enlarged breasts well into adulthood. This may be caused by:

  • Medications
  • Use of marijuana
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes

Due to the nature of the breast enlargement in men, diet and exercise will not sculpt the chest and reduce the breasts. Gynecomastia surgery is the only option.

Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia does not present a medical concern for men, so the most common reasons for gynecomastia correction is to improve self-confidence and the appearance of the chest area.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

If you are considering gynecomastia correction, you should:

  • Be in good health
  • Have realistic expectations of the surgery
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • Be near your ideal weight

What Do I Need to Do Before Having Male Breast Reduction?

Although the techniques used for gynecomastia surgery are similar to those used for female breast reduction, the nuances of the male body require a surgeon who is experienced with male breast reduction. This ensures that you maintain a masculine appearance to your chest area.

What Should I Expect on The Day of My Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia correction can be achieved via liposuction, surgery or a combination of the two techniques. Liposuction is most appropriate for men who have a small amount of fat and glandular tissue to remove. Your surgeon will recommend general or local anesthesia.

For male breast reduction via liposuction, small incisions are made around the areola. A cannula is inserted through the incision and used to loosen and suction out the excess fat.

Gynecomastia surgery requires an incision in the areola or in the armpit area. The incision allows access to remove excess glandular tissue and fat. Liposuction may be used to refine the results of the surgery.

How Long Does It Take to Perform Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia surgery takes two to three hours. Liposuction may take one hour.

What to Expect After Gynecomastia Surgery

The chest is wrapped with a compression bandage. You will have some discomfort and tenderness after the surgery. Non-prescription medications can help, but we may also prescribe a pain medication to help you relax over the next few days. Bruising and swelling are normal for the first one to two weeks.

Most patients return to work after one or two days. You will need to avoid sexual activity for up to two weeks, and strenuous exercise must be avoided for at least three weeks.

Will I Have Scars After Getting a Male Breast Reduction?

The scars from gynecomastia correction are difficult to see. At first, the incisions will heal with a pink or red color. The scars then turn brown or tan and fade. The scars will not disappear completely. You can help the scars fade properly by avoiding sunlight for the first six months.

When Will I See the Results?

The swelling may last for three months or longer, at which time you will see full results.

What Are Possible Complications of Gynecomastia Surgery?

Having one of our qualified plastic surgeons perform your gynecomastia surgery will reduce the likelihood of developing complications. All surgeries, though, have inherent risks associated with the anesthesia. Other complications are bleeding, infection, changes in skin coloration and abnormalities in the areola or nipple. You may also experience a loss of sensation in the nipple area, and this may last up to one year.

How Long Will the Results of Male Breast Reduction Last?

The results of male breast reduction are permanent, but weight does play a role in the longevity of the procedure. For this reason, you should live an active lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight.

Male breast reduction is elective, so the procedure is not covered by insurance. We explain the cost after your consultation. Richmond Plastic Surgeons accepts several forms of payment, including financing through CareCredit®.
