Neck liposuction is an ideal solution for anyone with persistent fat deposits below the chin or in the neck area: Your surgeon will sculpt the area, remove fat, and restore the attractively angular qualities to your chin and jaw. A number of advanced techniques allowing our surgeons to provide incredibly precise results, with shorter recovery times.

While liposuction is never a substitute for proper dieting and regular exercise, neck liposuction can neatly eliminate stubborn areas of neck fat that just won’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neck Liposuction?

If you’re at a relatively normal weight and have firm, elastic skin with pockets of extra fat in your neck, you’re a perfect candidate for neck liposuction.

You should be physically healthy, psychologically stable, have realistic expectations. It’s worth noting that older patients with diminished skin elasticity might not always enjoy the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction tends to involve higher risk for anyone with medical issues like diabetes, heart problems, lung disease, poor circulation, or if you’ve recently had surgery near the treatment area.

How Should I Prepare For My Surgery?

Your board-certified surgeon will expertly walk you through the preparation process for surgery, going over guidelines around eating and drinking, smoking, vitamins, iron tablets, and other medications. If you develop a cold or an infection of any kind, especially a skin infection, we might need to postpone your surgery. In some rare cases, your doctor might recommend that you have blood drawn ahead of time, as it might be needed during surgery. Also, while you’re preparing, be sure you have someone to drive you home after the procedure and, if needed, to help you at home for a day or two.

Where Will My Surgery Be Performed?

We perform liposuction right here in our office facility, in an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital, depending on the specificities of the procedure.

Smaller-volume liposuction is often done on an outpatient basis, for the sake of cost and convenience. If a larger volume of fat is to be removed, or if the liposuction is being performed in conjunction with other procedures, you might need to stay in a hospital.

What Can I Expect on the Day of My Neck Liposuction?

During your neck liposuction in Richmond, your surgeon will remove localized deposits of neck fat, to re-contour your neck and lower face.

Through a tiny incision, your surgeon will insert a narrow tube (or cannula) which vacuums the fat layer beneath the skin. The cannula will be pushed and pulled through the fat layer, breaking up fat cells before suctioning them out. The suction will be provided by a vacuum pump or large syringe, depending on the surgeon’s preference.

Are There Risks Associated with Neck Liposuction?

Liposuction is typically quite safe. We select our patients carefully, employ highly trained and board-certified staff, and use the most advanced technology to avoid undue risks. Our surgeons are all board-certified, and specialize in body contouring.

Our surgeons have advanced surgical skills, allowing them to perform procedures that remove large amounts of fat (more than 5 liters or 5,000 ccs), and we’ll be sure to work with you so you understand every step of the procedure.

More extensive liposuction procedures will require attentive after-care, so we’ll take great care to set up a plan by which your surgeon can monitor your condition closely, ensuring that you’re healing properly.

Our facilities are state-of-the-art, with our board-certified surgeons making sure to use the latest techniques and most advanced technology, minimizing any risks that might present themselves.

Risks can increase if a higher number of areas are being treated at the same time, or if the areas for treatment are relatively larger in size. Removing a large amount of fat and fluid can sometimes require a longer operating time than would be necessary for the treatment of a smaller area. Our surgeons work carefully to avoid problems like:

  • Infection
  • Delays in your recovery time
  • The formation of fat clots
  • Blood clots that can migrate to the lungs
  • Unfavorable drug reactions.

What Can I Expect After My Neck Liposuction Procedure?

After your neck liposuction procedure, you’ll likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. In some cases, a small drainage tube will need to be inserted beneath the skin for a couple of days, to prevent any potential fluid build-up. You might also be fitted with a comfortably snug elastic garment, which can help to control swelling and enables your skin to better fit its new contours.

This can be worn over the treated area for a few weeks. Your doctor might also prescribe antibiotic medication, to prevent infection.

You can definitely expect a bit of downtime, and you’ll feel tired for a certain period of time immediately following your procedure.

At Richmond Plastic Surgeons, we utilize the most advanced techniques available, which go a long way towards reducing some of the more common post-operative discomforts, but you might still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding, and a bit of temporary numbness. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to help you with any pain, and you’ll likely feel stiff and sore for a few days after your neck liposuction procedure.

When Can I Get Back to Normal?

Healing is always something of a gradual process. Your surgeon will probably advise you to start walking around as soon as possible, which helps reduce swelling and prevents blood clots from forming in your legs.

After about a week or two, you’ll begin to feel much better, and can be back to work within a few days of your procedure. The stitches will be removed or will simply dissolve on their own within the first seven to 10 days. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity for about a month, as your body continues to heal. The majority of your bruising and swelling will usually disappear within three weeks, but some swelling may take six or more months to subside completely.

Your surgeon will schedule follow-up visits, so we can monitor your progress and to see if any additional procedures are needed. If you experience anything unusual between visits (like heavy bleeding or a sudden increase in pain), or have any questions about what you can and can’t do, call us right now please.

FAQ

Will My Neck Liposuction Require Anesthesia?

If you’re only dealing with a small amount of neck fat, your liposuction can be performed with local anesthesia, numbing only the affected areas. We can also combine this localized treatment with intravenous sedation, to keep you relaxed and comfortable during the procedure.

When Can I Enjoy the Results of My Neck Liposuction?

Right away! You’ll notice a difference in the shape of your body right after surgery. Improvement will become even more apparent after about four to six weeks, as most of the swelling subsides. After about three months, any persistent swelling will be gone. You’ll fit more comfortably in a wide variety of clothes, and will love the look and feel of your body. By eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can maintain your new shape for years to come!

What is the cost of neck liposuction?

Because every patient is different, the cost of neck liposuction can vary greatly. Following your initial consultation, your surgeon will provide you with an estimated cost which will include the operating room, anesthesia fees, and surgeon’s fees. Please call our office to schedule an appointment.
