Otoplasty (Ear Surgery/Ear Shaping) in Richmond, VA
Otoplasty, also known as “ear shaping” and “ear surgery,” corrects the shape, size, and position of the ears. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers ear surgery and ear reshaping (otoplasty) for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.
What is an Otoplasty?
Heredity has an important role in the shape, size, and position of your ears. Children suffer the most serious consequences of having misshapen ears as they are teased and bullied in school. Adults, though, may also be ridiculed about their ears. Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that helps reshape the ears.
Benefits of Ear Surgery and Ear Shaping
Ear surgery and ear shaping help with:
- Ears that stand out from the head too far
- Large ears
- Asymmetrical ears
- General abnormalities of the ears
- Ear lobes that are too small or large
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Otoplasty?
Ear surgery can be performed on children and adults. The primary consideration for children is the stage of development.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having Ear Surgery/Ear Shaping?
Because the ears are primarily made of cartilage, your surgeon should be adept at working on these types of tissues. At Richmond Plastic Surgeons, we specialize in ear shaping procedures for adults and children. The best way to prepare for otoplasty is to schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons.
Parents who are considering ear surgery for their children should be actively engaged in conversations about how their youngsters feel about their ears and any teasing they may experience. You should have a positive outlook on the surgery to help your child feel comfortable and confident about the procedure.
What Should I Expect on The Day of My Otoplasty?
Children tend to be the most comfortable with general anesthesia, whereas adults typically need only local anesthesia and a sedative. The surgeon makes an incision at the back of the ear to access the cartilage and reshape it. Larger pieces of cartilage may be removed to move the ears closer to the head. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the results, the incisions are closed with sutures.
How Long Does It Take to Perform Ear Surgery/Ear Shaping?
Otoplasty takes two to three hours.
What to Expect After Otoplasty
The ears are wrapped with a bandage and should be protected from any type of impact. Children should be watched carefully so that they do not touch or rub their ears. Adults can go home the same day, but children may need to stay the night in the hospital. Adults can return to work after five days, and children can return to school after seven. You should advise the teachers to closely monitor your child, and you may want to keep them off the playground until they are healed.
